gotta love days like this.....
« on: November 24, 2011, 06:01:07 am »

so this started out as just a simple primary swap
from and ultima 3.35 to a bdl 1.5 enclosed system
all was going well....and then all hell broke loose....
anyone who has a spare rotor for an evo laying around with magnets still attached ????

picture one, oil tank hanging out wonder why.....

picture two...where is the primary...??

 picture three....parts everywhere

picture four.....houston we have a problem...those magnets are supposed to be attached to the outer surface...

picture five....that is one old funky looking stator

picture 6 where is the starter...just hanging out..time to clean the wiring up a bit

picture 7-8-9 and maybe hang a new fender...i think so

A good starter shop could glue to magnets back on there for you, it does not look like any broke. They are not cracked are they?

They use an epoxy resin to do just that. I had one come off years ago and had the guy at the starter place glue it back on. I never had any problems with it from that point on. That is all they do when they re-man them. As for the winding if it is not shorted go with it. You mentioned something about a starter of the bike???? Are they doing that now??

no. no issue with starter, was being funny because this was supposed to be a simple project of primary replacement.....it became WAY MORE THAN JUST THAT....decide since i had to remove the battery and oil tank off to get at the starter i would fix some wiring issues....then to get the oil tank bolt i had to remove the rear exhaust so i decided to go ahead and wrap it, and then found the rotor magnets, and then figure i might as well swap the fender since i had it sitting here and had to take it off anyway.........just became one huge project that was not supposed to be this big...was hoping to wrap up the primary swap in a day...so much for that idea...lol@me

I was as well kidding about the starter I do not have one on my Bike, I kick start it. But all in all it may be an easier fix then you think. Hope it turns out that you can get her back up and running soon.

so....was thinking of jb welding the magnets and then using epoxy to "seal" the magnets so this can happen again but i think i am just gonna bite the bullet and order an accel kit with the solid magnet so that i dont have this problem again plus it replaces a questionable stator plus i get a new regulator to boot...
anybody had any problems with the accel charging systems?

HERES MY INPUT.. that stator looks old.. heres what usually kills one.. the wires going to the plug have the insulation fatigue from the heat.. the insulation crumbles off , leaving a shorted set of wires.. so if the wires are hard & not pliable & easily bendable , replace the stator.. i would regardless for 30 bucks its not worth chancing.. next , since you cant buy just rotor magnets , this tells me that the rotor isnt intended to have the magnets glued back on if they come loose..some vehicle may have replacement magnets.. never seen it on a harley.. so again.. why chance it.. on the side of the road isnt the time for it all to come apart on you.. YOU DO KNOW THERE A BIG SPACER WASHER THAT GOES ON THE SHAFT BEFORE TO ROTOR IS REINSTALLED.. RIGHT ??.. IT KEEPS THE ROTOR FROM RUBBING & KNOCKING THE MAGNETS OFF ........ IT CAN RUB THE CASE SCARRING IT BADLY & BEYOND REPAIR IF THAT SPACER ISNT USED.. so unless you like taking all that shit apart numerous times ... add some new parts.. thats my take & i wouldnt allow anything less to leave my shop.. bottomline is something happened for those magnets to come loose.. on to another subject.. you will need to work on trimming that fender out to get it to fit properly.. the chances of dropping it on to the cutout & it looking & fitting right are slim to none.. you'll need to open the cut out for the chain up more allowing the fender to roll around more.. before you begin , hold the frt. end straight & angle your fender support back to where its angle matches the forks angle.. then cut & fit the fender to that.. if these angles dont match it makes for a rookie looking job.. trust me..
