speedo problem feel free to move
« on: March 10, 2009, 01:56:10 pm »

OK,I have a problem on my glide/road king.......lol
I have an 87 glide that has been converted to a road king.....the problem I have is that it has an electric speedo, but doesnt have the pickup in the tranny for it. there is alo no provisions in the tank or console to run a cable to drive a mechanical speedo.....can anyone tell me my options to get the factory type speedo working,I have a bar mounted aftermarket speedo that works, but I would rather clean it up some.My question is,is there any way to get this thing working to go from cable drive to electric speedo? Any & all help is appreciated

Ya gotta get the tranny case machined to fit the sensor. Most cases already have a spot to be machined, you need another case to get the correct location. pain in the ass, but it can be done. Are there any rear wheel speedo drives you can use?

Whatcha' talking about there Dave?

The speedo sensor that goes into the trans....what does it work off of? Pulses from spinning gears or? Where I'm going with this is if the speedo sensor is reading magnetic pulses what says it has to be in the trans to read a signal?

Than again I suspect the sensor Dave mentioned probably does exactly that. ;D

if he has no hole in his tranny to mount a stock type speedo sensor , they make aftermarket electric set ups , that will run an h.d. speedo.. they mount on the axle & somehow pick up the pulse from the wheel revolving.. i used one on a guys bike some years back & it worked very well .. if i recall, custom chrome sold it..

I use the sensor to work off the rear axle of a VW trans or the front wheel and works great for me, simple and it works, grinn.
