Jap bobber
« on: January 05, 2012, 01:41:03 am »

Hey fellas,

My oldest boy is in Texass and been build'n on a '76 Yam 650 bobber.  He's got a pretty trick look'n set up (hard tail and all) and has all the mechanical in top order 'cept for the carbs.  Bear in mind he's a master at mechanics and diagnosing shit, and he's come of the mind the carbs are worn out.  There's a brass sleeve with a steel shaft between each barrel of those carbs that operate the valves which he's proven are worn to a point where they are leaking air (too much) into the throttle body causing the bike to stall out under load.  He found a replacement set of carbs off Craigslist and found them to be identically worn, if not worse so he's out the money on that screw deal.  He cannot find anyone in San Antonio that can rebuild them fuckers and doesn't have the 1200 bucks he's been told a new set would run.  Nore does he have the micro mini tools them Japs use to work on them carbs or he'd rebuild the damn things himself.  He may have exagerated the expense of the new ones voicing his frustration but, seriously, I doubt they'd be as cheap as a Harley carb.  Them Mikunis he's got are synced together and their tightness in that brass/steel rod and sleeve are critical for proper function.  Any of you know if you can help find him a set that are functionally reliant?  He said the motor's been given a power upgrade make'n it a 749 cc if I remember correctly of our conversation.  He also said he'd need the throats to be 38 mm to support and give full performance of the motor upgrade.  They do not have to be Mikuni, either... but they have to fit the 650 shell of the motor he's got.  Can anyone help him find an affordable set?  That's all he's got left between him and get'n in some sweet riding to and from work every day.  I can post a pic of his bike if you guys are interested in see'n a Jap bobber project.

build a manifold that Y's from the heads into on rubber for a single harley type mikuni.. one bigger carb. instead of 2 smaller ones will do the trick.. he can use his existing ports & use 2 rubber boot 90's attaching to a harley manifold .. then stick a mikuni clamp on boot to attach the carb.. make a support & its done.. i have a sporty manifold that should work .. its his if he needs it.. have him call & we can work out some measurements to adapt it all.. fact is he could adapt it all to have a side mount carb.. NOW THAT WOULD BE THE CATS ASS ON THAT YAMMIE..

Thats a damn good Idea Dave!!!!.....................If I had a set of 650 yam heads,I could knock that out in my shop.
Frank...if yer readin this,I know you could do what Dave reccomended, plus the fact that scoot would end up with more low end torque with one slightly bigger carb as opposed to them 2 smaller ones!

Had a bud that put a 883 sporty carb on a Virago, made his own manifold..  Damn thing ran like a raped ape.
Thought about it and a "log" manifold would be the easiest to make..Square or round..with 4 stubs for the head and a single stub for the carb.
Food for thought,
