Seat How-To
« on: September 23, 2008, 05:47:13 pm »

I'm no expert at saddles so I figure if I can do it then anybody can do it. Here's a link to a very good article for beginners about seat making. Hope it helps some folks. http://64.172.168.34/neatstuff/Saddle-Making.pdf
Here's my personal butt cushion:
If I keep at for another twenty years I hope to get as good as some of the professionals who'll be posting here but there's no excuse not to try and make your own stuff just to see what happens. Trying something new also helps you to appreciate the skills and talents and the time put into the products we to often take for granted. The Pro's deserve every penny they charge for what they put into a piece of work.

damn .. your seat looks good to me gww25 .. that is one tough craft.. no doubt.. time , is one of my biggest enemies & what spurs me to not do more work on a bike myself.. for times sake, i usually have to pay the pro's for work like that. hopefully one day soon i'll be able to spend more time doing each piece myself .. its very rewarding on a personal level..

nice work indeed bear.. i believe you've done quite a few seats.. its a talent that surely must improve with each seat .. there are so many variables..

Bibs,
I know how to stamp, carve leather seats, but don't know how to make the holes line up fot the lacing, I know Yona has done alots of seats and look great too, but it is hard for anyone to show the secrets to it ,lol.
Maybe someone could start a thread on this and we could learn, just want to do a couple seats, not make a living out of it, too darn old for that, grinn.

I use a 4-hole punch, a single-hole pucnh and a plier/nipper type the makes a hole and then opens it up till it is the right size. All my punchs made "Slits, not round holes...round holes are for pussys that glue and sew their leather together...That is the money-hungry fuckers the do the cross-stitch and brass grommets and tell you that it is laced...LAME....I have posted a couple of pics that tell you how to start, stitch and end the lace...will check on here and if they  are not here , I will add... The longest piece of lace should be no longer that from your lap to the tip of your fingers over your head minus 6 "...3 times the length of the average dick... Punch the holes in the piece with the less distance around ...I start at the front of the seat, one side or the other and sticth around the nose, helps hold the two pieces in alignment. I match 1 for 1 on the curves, or add an extra hole if the holes in the other piece seem stretched out ...you can go thru a hole twice, if you need to catch up.Now I mold my leather to the seat and trimm and punch as I go ....Harder, but you get a tighter seat !

I have started How-to- at other sites and all the How-to gets lost in all the questions and the disagreements...even on leather forums...I have a page on FB that shows the work I do ... Scooter Seats....
....https://www.facebook.com/pages/Scooter-Seats/258496697498638?sk=wall  ...If you you go there and ask , I will answer and I don't hide the "secrets"...TIP: If you like black leather and do not want to spend a lot on dye....Pick up the rustiest iron, that you can find in the shop, and put it in a gallon of distilled clear vinagar....in about a week or to you will have >>>VINAGROON...it wil react with the tannic acid in the leather and turn black all the way thru....soak the piece in a tea solution ( no Sugar ) and it will get so black that you will not believe it...and the leather does not have the streaks that you get from using swabs....Now , quit ya bitchin... ; )

How-to Lace....
1 )Applique lace...jsut for decortion or for laceing flat butt splices
2&3 )Round lace....for joining top to bottom ( yes.. I put leather on both sides...not glued on felt ! )
4 ) Re-do and re-lace ...When I got it (Professional Job !!!!!)
% ) When I finished...Had to redye as water-based stain wiped of when I cleaned it..added 1/2" of closed-cell foam...added a little fullness....46 hours from start to finish and I lost money , but did some trading and we were both happy !
