Powder Coating
« on: January 20, 2012, 01:02:19 pm »

Well I guess this is the place to put this, grinn.
As of March-2012 I will have a shop that does Powder Coating, anything from coating your parts to doing your headers in Cermaic coating, so if you need something coated, I will give members here a discount to do your parts.
Will have 2 ovens, 1 is 2'w x 2'h x 4'Long [small parts oven and the other will be 6' w x 8' h x 18 'long for them long and large parts. all parts get blasted to insure the best coating possible, on delicate parts, will be blasted with glass beads or other and all parts will be protected  so not to gt powder in them threads.
I have been a custom coated for over 8 years before I got into trikes, so I have the experience to do this, I will be joining forces with another person that is qualified in the bussiness as well, he has done it for over 7 years, so we have the experience together.
There is over 200,000 colors on the market, so pick your color, grinn.
Might have a website up at a later date, also have a coating that is in a vinyl and is chrome and will stick to anything out there and is wrinkle free, looks great too.

good luck man. been doing it myself for about 7yrs as well. not much lately but still love slingin powder on my own junk. my oven was home built at 6'tall x3x3. do you have a agitation tub for the ceramic stuff?hand polishing that shit sux.

i would advise building a burning oven for outgassing and burning off old powder. makes things easier.

Glad to hear you are doing it too, No on the burn off oven, I use stripper that works in about 5 minutes, and the flesh too if you get it on you, grinn.

no matter what you still need to outgass.then sandblast. even after using stripper.

best thing i have found (keep in mind i did everything myself.no real help . i just did it ,f'd up and redid it) useing 2 ovens in a production setting helps with timing. outgassing and prewarming in one oven then basecoat, finish coat in the other. the oven can get dirty and a bit flakey inside with oil burnout and scale.then it floats in the oven and contaminates the air and finished product.

lots of maintenance anyway you look at it.if you do everything in one oven, the down time can be costly.

anyhow i wish you the best of luck. this is a very tough time to start a business like this. no one in my area is customizing or spruceing up anything. no spare cash.

I appreciate your advise, but you don't need no fricking burnoff oven, sure if you use stripper, you have to blast it then clean it then coat it, regardless of 2 coat or single coat.
If you keep your oven clean, then things will not have trash in it like I have seen by other peoples work,
You say there is no one in your area spending any money, then you might be in the wrong place, besides there are other people besides bikers that spend money, grinn and far as coating headers and all with ceramic coating, Yes I have a large tumbler[polisher] to polish my parts and not just headers get coated with the stuff.
I have done this for some time also and know how to handle it all, Time will tell if I make it all work or not, but I know it will work,
Have a great one,

wasnt really trying to sound like an ass cw1.i live on the side of a mountain in a subrural pennsy and do everything in my basement shop.

while doing things under the gun i wished for 2 ovens. burnoff or at least one to use a preheat temp and one at cook temp.and then a cool area. but not enough space and not being able to regulate the air in the area killed me in production and contamination.

so now i just do my own stuff and custom no pressure jobs. i cant stand for long periods any longer.

so again , not trying to be an ass,or hi jack you thread, just offering my own experience.

you prolly have a real shop at your disposal too i bet.air filtration.air line cooler, large blast cabinets, large dip tanks.wash tubs.really i'm just jealous.

Okay on being an ass, I don't mind people sharing there knowledge, but I do not have all that you think I have, just a low key shop and starting off small this time and make it work, I had all the big stuff before[11 years ago] and lots of people working for me and had large accounts too, just I got caught up in it all and was becoming an asshole , so I sold the company to the people that worked for me and now have some freedom to play and enjoy life now before it goes away,
It is funny now to me, I remember when I started as a small bussiness , then I had gotten a contract with Lockheed doing their airplane parts [what a mess- military specs stuff] then got another contract for a place that produced Cycle frames[all black] we had to do 1000 frames per week to keep the contract[at $65.00 per frame]Now bear in mind, they were new frames and already cleaned for us to coat.
And the list of contracts went on and on, ended up with some 120 contracts per year, just to show you some of the work we had done, next time you go to Home depot or Lowe's, look at the handcarts you load your lumber on and the racks that hold the lumber and other things up off the floor, we had coated those for those 2 companies.
But for now just want to stay small and enjoy a little,
So you have a great day too.
