marks sporty..
« on: October 19, 2008, 10:50:11 pm »

here the beginning of a nice sporty.. a 1977 iron head.. jaxon built the motors lower end .. mark worked his butt off getting the stuff powdered & chasing parts.. heres the beginning.. jaxon also milled these antique GMA { the brake makers } fender struts that GMA made  over 25 years ago.. they were originally for a big twin..

then there was an issue of height.. as you see the stock shocks versus late model 11 1/2 in. shocks.. after the shorty shocks were decided on , it was put up on its feet..

the short shocks on this model created other issues that wehad to correct.. the first was chain clearance on the oil tank.. & being as the stock oil tank & battery box wasnt working as far as looks went.. we got a custom tank off e-bay & cut it up to modify .. it came out nicely & just ne3eds welded out to be complete.. since we used curved big twin struts to raise the rear fender for the drop with the shocks, i fit up a fx shovel big twin rear fender & it really made the grade.. a couple of unused holes will be welded up on it & its bolt up time.. i'll show pics. of this stuff later.. out intent now is to use a shovel or maybe rigid type seat as we now have a hump versus the regular sporty straight type seat section.. of course we will clearance the sprocket cover for the lowered look also.. i was hoping mark might show up with the motor today, but alas, he didnt.. maybe next week end..

Hey Dave,  I attempted 3 seperate times this weekend to start this thread but it did not happen.  I think it is cool to have a section for sportsters.  This is a picture of what the bike started out as.

well here we are again.. the motor is sitting on the stand , awaiting me to assemble the heads , set up the cams & oil pump , get her all bolted together so it can be set into the frame.. of course i'll need marks help & hopefully we will have it more or less together soon..  , with the sale of some trike stuff mark had saved , that freed up some cash for forwards , a new chain, a cool lil' fender mount tail lite & a side mount tag bracket.. the rear fender is completely fit up & as soon as the lite arrives & those holes are drilled , its paint time.. all the gaskets are in hand the throttle cable is in hand & the clutch cable on the way.. i just measured for the frt. brake hose.. the hook up on the rear brake cable is not what i normally fool with , but we will figure it all out.. we will weigh the cost of rebuilding the starter & genny, versus new stuff.. no doubt wewill use the solid state reg. that mounts on the end of the genny.. every part from the bike in its original form is available to us.. its all in these boxes & bowl..  ;D gotta wade thru it all really soon.. the seats & chain guard are still being scouted out.. but we have definitely made some lateral moves forward.. i'll be poasting some final chassis pics. this week , before i pull the sheet metal for paint.. by looking closer & refitting the fender saved us some welding.. all thats left to weld is a few oil tank pieces..

THE OIL TANK IS AT THE WELDERS NOW.. THIS EVENING I'LL GO & FIT IT UP SO IT CAN BE TACKED TOGETHER, THEN BILLY WILL WELD IT OUT .. after a trial fit & the drilling of 2 holes.. if all looks well, its off to the coaters.. its ready for paint NOW too..

a few update pics. the new forwards bolted on & the rebuilt oil tank sitting in place.. notice how the oil tank has been cut in to allow chain clearance.. the stock sit ups were known to have the chain slap the tank if they got loose.. i had no doubt the chain would slap the tank , due to how much the chassis is lowered from stock.. that was a big problem, that is now solved..

Since these are old posts, I don't know how far you've gotten. I used the same oil tank on my rigid Sporty chopper. I had to carry a piece of cardboard around with me to put between my legs and the top of the tank. After the oil gets hot, the tank would burn my legs. ......but I looked cool doing it!  ;D

......I would use a bigger seat so your legs didn't touch the tank. Just a heads up for ya'.

I like yours so far. It looks like it'll be a cool bike when you're done.
