bought me an ultra classic
« on: February 03, 2012, 03:11:35 am »

took possession 3 days ago. 2000 ultra classic.owner claimed it had been rebuilt with a 103 kit with s&s flywheels, cam, power commander and a baker6 speed.

got it off ebay. black hills harley says they show an invoice of over 6000.00 last summer, the owner did not tell me about them replaceing the cases though.was  there an issue with bikes of that year breaking cases? the numbers dont match.runs good though with tons of ass but way too quiet.big ass fishtail pipes on it.and that gawdawful " live to ride "shit all over it.

can i remove a baffel or part of one to open up the growl factor?deer around here are stupid and dangerous so loud is better in my opinion.

love the bike but i gotta adjust the shifters and brake pedal.and it tends to pop and spit once in awhile under light load. can the power commander be adjusted to help with that?it came with the plastic box the commander came in with cd and papers and i believe an adapter.

looking for a trailer hitch for to tow around my trump chop(still in progress)

wityh all that performance work the exhaust could be your issue.. especially with that power commander.. a good tuner header would be best.. honestly , you shoulda got a bone ass stock bike.. performance stuff = a big ass pain.. but its done, so a lil' tinkering may be in order .. the bike may have never been dialed in right or he coulda traded it on a new stocker knowing it still needed dialed in.. ..

lottery...... nope. workers comp.i am never climbing ladders for a living again.took 8 surgeries and 8 yrs to be able to get that.

now i wanna make country wine for a living and sell brew and hydroponic supplies. if soc sec turns me down again.

i bought it from a private owner. worked for bhhd for a couple years after retireing as a truck driver and started a machine shop. now since they found oil in them hills he started up his trucking business again.

i called the bhhd and got a report on his claims and the service dept confirmed what he says.

i have seen a bunch of these bikes with performance upgrades and motors replaced. is there a problem with these 96" twinkie engines?

hell it's just a 103 kit with s&s flywheels substituted and mild cams and power commander. gonna take a few pics soon and post them.

i bought it really for the trike base. i really wanted a trike. an hd trike
to boot but them fuckers are way to salty.with the performance stuff on it, it should run a set of back wheels and a trailer with no issues.

with what i paid for this thing and a possible lehman kit i would still be under 15g. but i will see what i can do this summer with my legs .if i cant handle it i'll park it and convert it.

so what pipes would work with this set up again?

You need to get up with Bibs on the pipes.
He da man on that.
If ya do a  Lehman kit the pipes will be stuck out the back anyway.
None of those fancey pipes that end just behind you're heal.
Ya ought to be able to have a tune done to match the pipes.
That ya will have to play with by ear.  (No pun intended)

Also, check and see of ya need a set of raked trees.  From what I understand, if ya dont it'll be a "bear" to steer.

EFI bike...take it to a tuner unless you know what your doing.  Most of those guys can get every pony out of a tune that most of us can't (unless we have the tools to do it).  I for one don't have a dyno to start with or the skills to end with so I wouldn't myself.

If it is a 2000 it is not a 96" , I believe 2007 was the first year for a 96" in the bagger. Up to then they were 88" stock. The Screamin Eagles came 95" for a few years than changed to 103". The 110" SE's came around the time of the 96" stock version.

The early 88" motors still had the good bearings in them for the crank up to 2002. The later versions used a cheap version. When the 110's came out they had issues with crank end play.

I could go on and on with the differences. A 2000 is still a good motor. The injection (M&M) sucks balls for sure. In 2002 they changed to the Delphi injection which is far better IMO. I wrote an article several years ago on how to convert the 98-01 bikes with M&M to a carb using all OEM parts with no hacking. My 01 is still runing this conversion without fail.

The early bikes really benefit from either a gear change or a 6 speed. Out on the highway they are screeming for another gear around the 75-80 mph mark.

I've seeen two or three guys around here do the I-net download and try to do the tune on theirs...change pipes..take out the ceramic converter...all that good stuff..retune, retune, try again.
All had to go to the local guy and put it on the dino to get it straight.

Sooooooooo, do what ya is a gonna do with the pipes get the sound ya want and what ever, then go to the local guy.

well i do want a trike but i cant pay what they want. plus i dont want a stripped down p.o.s. or something i need to constantly screw with.or a sportster conversion.like i said i could still do a new lehman kit on it .and paint it and still be under 15g.

the modern trike companies offer good stuff for a conversion so if i cant handle the bigger beast than i will pull the trigger on a conversion or use this as a trade.

it seems that the engine numbers are not a match for the frame. that in itself isnt neccesarily a bad thing. ive bought many cars and trucks with engine swaps. and i just aint a purist but it gives me pause.

i need to call black hills harley again and try to get a print out of their records to see exactly what they did.

i do have the pc box and programmer disc and a reciept and warrantee for the baker 6. and the old owner i suppossed to send me a pc mapping that they dyno guy at bhhd did for him and he never installed cause he liked it the way it is.

hmmmmm, i do have a good cv carb and a supercharger.

puzz, what pipes are available for these things? i need to make it louder. any recommendations?

Start with any set of true dual headers. The Vance and Hines are the most popular. As for tail pipes if you want loud the V&H Classics are "get arrested loud". Depending on what is on there now is what would determine what I would do. If they are stock pipes there is a company who will recore/rebaffle them. If they are aftermarket pipes I'd look to see what they are and look into a baffle change.

sorry dave i didnt mean to misslead.
puzz is right i believe.

i am very green with harley engines so i dont know what came out when.

BHHD did a screaming eagle 103" kit and added s&s flywheels and cams. powercommander and some quiet as hell pipes that i need to lose.

i will call them on monday if i can remember, to determine what they did with the cases.

the p.o. didnt know about it i think,as he bought it used.he sent me a card with him listed as a saleman for 2 yrs ago.maybe i got sold,,, i dont think so though. just gotta find out the history on the thing.

well i took the big boy out yesterday and  i am just happier than a retard in a strip joint with this bike. although it still sneezes once in awhile it rides nice and pulls well.

i do not like the heal shifter. too short. i need a custom sized heal /toe shifter. i just took it off so i felt more comfortable.

i have been going to physical therapy for a ruptured disc in my neck and while there have been able to use the gym equipment and the heated pool with treadmill. been gaining strength in my legs and lost some weight. feeling better and feel fairly comfortable while holding up the beast. pushing it back while in the saddle is a bitch though.

gonna call bhhd today. just aint got around to it.

got my print out from bhhd.5/25/10 it shows a s.e. flywheel kit.s.e. pro 1690 pistons with power commander and cams. but it still has the stock duals with screaming eagle pipes.

it has all this beef and tiny pipes. it has a hesitation sometimes at power when i open it up. it has a intermittant "cough" when i am in traffic and going from light to light or slow riding. it only shows 74.49 horses and 101.63 ft-lbs torque from the dyno print i got with it done on 6/15/10 . my brothers buell chop is better than that and it's a stocker 1203cc.

i think it is getting choked down with those pipes. what do you guys think?

on another note i see inside the tank the sealer is bubbling and coming off.fucking kreem shit is junk. now  i need to try to strip that without screwing up my paint.

true duals & punch the baffles on those muffs, or a 2 into 1 header, with a free flowing air filter will help alot.. a mikuni carb. would wake it up alot too.. the cv aint hitting on nuttin' ..

any body got any ideas?

i do not want to f up the se pipes. what is available out there for my application.

i know nothing about feully bikes. with the power commander on the bike i know it's adjustable to compensate for pipe and mods but that would be a stealership stay and pay situation i cant afford now.i'd rather gain info from you fella's. and do the work myself.
