Magnetos
« on: October 18, 2008, 12:29:15 pm »

Tech question concerning the differences between the Joe Hunt H 4 magneto vs the Morris H5 magneto. Are there any significant differences between the two beyond price? I have found no tech info on the H4 mags, and have not been able to make an informed decision between the two. If anyone can help, either with tech site info or personal knowledge, it would be greatly appreciated.

magneto's are highly misunderstood part .. i know they either work or dont.. but weyland broke down the function for me once on chooperweb.. i'm not sure but dont think you can use electric start with one.. i know mags fire hot when working properly .. i dont know the differences between these 2 you mention either.. gww25 may be the one to enlighten us on these mags. or possibly yona.. theres so much about these old school parts i have forgotten.. i know a dyna-s is a hard ignition to beat & cant be in my opinion..

The problem is not in the understanding of how they work, I understand the processes and function. I can install and time a magneto, I was looking for product info. I know the M5 has a "booster" type of mechanism that delays spin and increases speed of rotation when kick starting (kinda like a pitching machine) producing a stronger spark. I was wondering if anyone knew whether the hunt h4 had the same type of setup. Modern magnetos are extremely reliable once properly set up.

I love my M-5, I've had mine since 1984 and it has never let me down.  When I was choosing between magnetos it was the M-5's spring loaded advance that sold me.  I've use it with electric start, kick start only, shovel and shovel/evo hybred( check out the picture of the twins, the Orange crate sporten the M-5).  My shovel was a 98cu.  When I pulled the shovel I installed 100 4x4 S&S and slapped the M-5 on her, no problem.  This set-up is a 1-3 kicker.  Buttom line I don't think Hunt offers the auto advance.  Good luck with your choice.
