Oil the Dreaded Question
« on: September 25, 2008, 02:05:48 am »

Yea i will do it, and ask the dreaded Question. What oil do you like to run and why? Is it a mind thing, cost, are is one better then another. Don't hate me, but we all know the question will wind up here sooner or later so lets hear it.

I've used a variety of oils over the years, and have done quite a bit of research on the subject. Let me begin by saying that I've used Harley motor oil, Castrol, Pennzoil, Valvoline, and Mobil 1, as well as some other generic oils. (probably some I don't remember). I've never had an issue with any of them. However, when I started researching the subject, and reading studies done on viscosity and break down in air cooled engines, this is what I've found. Now I know I'm dumping the can of worms that Wolf opened onto the ground, but regular old car motor oils faired as well as premium motorcycle oils in all of the research I could find. (throw rocks if you must) the top performer was Mobil 1. this beat everything else on the market. it had a more gradual break down of viscosity in air cooled V-Twins (tested by running the various oils in the same engine under the same conditions for equal times and temperatures). I truly believe that there is alot of propaganda out there from oil manufactures concerning their oils. the bottom line is that you should use what you have faith in. In a pinch I'll use what I find at the gas station I push the old girl into. But that's me, be bold and be your own Biker and stop reading my opinions on oil, I'm sure you all have your favorite , so stick with it and be happy!

BTW, I always use 80-90 gear oil in my transmissions....

I'll toss my bandana, errr, hat into that open can of worms by saying up here in Canada, we, or at least the guys I hang with, don't carry the passion for oils like the Americans. Maybee it's just Americans on websites. I can't ever remember having such in depth discussions - no, ARGUMENTS over oil. Every forum I've been on, including F150 stuff has been long winded moaning about brand X, and praises for brand Y. Horsetheif said it best: use what you have faith in, stick with it & be happy.
There are better oils than others, I agree. Just change it all the time, 2500 KMs for me. I have read all about bearing skate, and if it's a myth, I'm still not sure. There's supposed to be different SAE specs for Harley oil, but that spec can be found on most motorcycle oil labels, and that's my two cents worth. This time around I put Castrol in the bike, 'cause that's what WALMART sells. Most times, I'll get the oil at the bike shop. I think the last oil I got from there was Revtech. I never noticed any difference, even though the price was double.

I'm running Ansoil because of the data by third party labs and if you join their group you get it for less than the dealer cost and they ship it to your door.  I've tried them all and none of the engine failers I've had was because of oil.
I am experimenting on Ugly Betty,  I started out with 10w30 car oil and at 20 miles switched to 20w50 car oil until I get to 1500 were I'll switch to Ansoil.  The car oil brand is the cheapy Napa oil.  Ho ya Betty's 120cu. and she runs like a top and its takes along time to get her up to N.O.T..

Shame it comes to that. Ya gotta ride that girl, I know how much sweat went into the build. It turned out so sharp, let the holes be drilled. I'm gettin' over it. LOL

well i gotta agree to a point.. what your happy with may not be what your bikes happy with.. the 25/65 rev-tech oil shows very little breakdown signs for a fossil oil at interval oil changes, as does mobil1 .. when you talk synthetics, theres a big gap in whats best.. i cant seem to find who is making the r/t oil for them to bottle, but i suspect mobil .. except the weight variations dont run true with mobil's normal oils..theres a big difference when talking fossil oil & synthetics.. i , like horsethief have used it all.. ido know most car oil are o.k. if you change regularly.. but in all.. i want whats best, but dont want to use synthetic oil.. reasons of my own..  dammit man.. drill them holes..

Oil is extremely controversial. Most tend to be on one side of the fence or the other as far as fossil or synthetic.

There is a vast majority of information on on the net in regards to what each oil does now and long term. I find some of that data to be subjective also.

So for me I run what makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. To date I run SYN in my diesel truck. My Bagger has been back and forth (I believe because I didn't have any SYN on the shelf last oil change). The Sport Bike gets SYN. The Beater Bike and Chopper gets Fossil oil. The Beater bike because I have six-seven cases of standard motorcycle oil here to use up. The Chopper had minimal oil pressure with the syn so I dumped it in favor of standard oil. I found that if I'm buying oil I'll go with Syn, if I use what is on the shelf I use standard oil. My car will run standard Diesel oil than after some runs on the motor I'll switch to Syn. Gear and trans lubes, all Syn. The truck came with Syn in the rears!

Yes certainly. I can feel the difference in the morning with the Syn. The truck fires over easier, it is smoother ideling and accelerates much better. I beleive my truck came with it in the motor new however I'm not certain.

synthetic will work finw in your 05, Dave. Lots of new high performance vehicles, like CVO Harleys, corvettes, and I'm guessing Cobra Mustangs, came with synthetic years ago..
